Biography
Antonia Carver is one of the most influential figures in the Gulf art world, and the person who has shaped Art Jameel's public identity. A British arts leader who began her career in publishing and criticism — she edited and wrote on Middle Eastern art and film, and contributed to outlets including Bidoun — she became director of Art Dubai in 2010, building the fair into the central commercial event of the regional calendar over five editions. In 2016 she moved to lead Art Jameel as director, and oversaw the creation of its first permanent home, Jameel Arts Centre, working so closely with the architects that she advised on everything from materials to gallery layout, insisting on a flexible, kunsthalle-style space built around artists and audiences rather than spectacle. Under her direction Art Jameel has expanded across the region, opening Hayy Jameel in Jeddah and forging partnerships with institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is regularly cited among the most consequential cultural figures in the Middle East — a curator, editor and institution-builder whose career tracks the rise of the UAE art scene itself.
