Why this gallery matters
Exhibo editorial
Rom Levy spent twenty years curating across Paris, London, Los Angeles, Moscow, Berlin, Shanghai before landing in Dubai and opening Volery in 2020. The name comes from a murmuration — a flock of birds in collective flight — which is exactly the image the gallery has in mind: international artists flying in from everywhere, briefly occupying an address in DIFC, then moving on. The programme runs on that rhythm: monthly solo shows and group exhibitions, each one a different nationality and register, united by what Levy calls the New Contemporary Wave — figurative, emotionally charged, technically accomplished, not quite street art and not quite fine art but somewhere in the charged territory between them. The roster has included Indonesian painter Roby Dwi Antono, Australian painter Jordy Kerwick, Korean artist Seulgi Kim, Moroccan artist Ghizlane Agzenaï and Romanian painter Sebastian Hosu — artists who move between gallery representation and collector bases built partly through social media, partly through the kind of word-of-mouth that comes from work that is genuinely pleasurable to live with. Volery operates by appointment only, which in DIFC has become less exception than pattern — a private viewing model that suits collectors who want focused attention rather than an open door. V-Residency, the gallery's artist residency programme, extends the commitment beyond exhibitions into production support, curatorial mentorship and access to Dubai's broader art community.
