About the work

A pool is the most Dubai of subjects — ubiquitous, aspirational, a symbol of the life the city promises and delivers. Pugacheva makes it in textile and collage, in a format small enough to be intimate. The contrast between subject and medium is the point: the glossy, contemporary, unanchored world of Dubai rendered in materials that are slow, handmade, accumulated over time. A pool reflects the sky above it and nothing else. Embroidery holds time differently.
