About the work
A figure — or the suggestion of one — caught in the hour when symbols stop meaning what they should. Shalaby builds his compositions in layers of visual quotation: antiquity, fashion, theatre, the occult. Midnight Spell sits in the register of the title — something being cast, something that works by being half-seen.
