About the work

The title borrows from Christopher Priest's novel — a building of sealed apartments, each resident living entirely inside their own accumulated objects and memories, unable or unwilling to connect with the world outside. Shalaby is drawn to that kind of enclosure: the self as architecture, identity as a room you've decorated so specifically that no one else can quite enter it.
